“Hi Janet! The masters sound absolutely amazing. I can’t properly express how happy we are with the way these songs sound. It’s almost as if Phil was able to rewrite our songs thru his mastery. We were all drawn into the songs as if we had never heard them before. Please give your husband a big kiss for us! 😉
We will recommend you to everyone we know. You have always made me feel warm & welcome. We will be back as long as you will have us. Thanks again for the wonderful job.

“Phil has a way of shaping a session. It is hard to explain but he always gets me to play what I didn’t think I knew. He encourages rather than directs and although sessions with Phil can be gruelling, they are always exciting and very rewarding. He is a terrific musicians and producer. The material itself inspires. You’ve done a stunning, extraordinary job. Your handwork is all over this. It could never have been done within spitting-distance without you; even the brief horn arrangement, you wacky guy, and the space, subtle chord changes bla bla bla. It’s not Juno, it’s Grammy; dead serious. I can hear the time you spent on this, honest to God. It’s monumental. I bow to you, but only once and you have to stand still…..not be wandering around back…….”

“Hi Phil and Janet:
Just finished listening to the red book master CD of Maps – Burned or Lost on my livingroom stereo! Wow! I must say Phil it is one of the best sounding recordings I have ever heard in any genre. And we seem to traverse a few genres.  So much depth to the mix. All of the instruments and vocals stand out just as they should! Bravo! Mastering to  2 inch analogue tape was a great idea.  I haven’t heard it except for one song, but I bet the new U2 record doesn’t sound half as good. The musicianship is outstanding on our album. Everyone really stepped up to the plate. And Phil, you were the maestro that made it all happen, with great vision for the whole amidst many moving parts. Thanks so much Janet for coordinating such a big project so seamlessly. What a way to end 2017! Happy Holidays! See you both early in 2018!”

The studio has started an internet radio station to feature the work of artists the have made use of it in some or another form (recording, mastering, magic potions with ginger, lemon, and cranberry). “Hi Phil,
Minutes, days and months keep passing!
I keep following your Facebook posts – wow! Are you busy! Good for you and Jan!
I accidentally came across this website tribute to Dario –
http://dariodomingues.cheza.ca/home.php
Check out the video “Music Mondo” (I never saw the final cut)  – you’ll probably recognize a few faces 🙂
Most importantly, listen to Caribbean Tango (early on the show) – I’m sure you’ll recognize the engineering genius behind it. More importantly, I vividly remember the exact day in the studio. I had my old blue ‘Pans’ and you note-by-note directed me through an amazing solo in that song. It was my mallets but, your musical genius!

I remember it as if it were yesterday.  The name of the studio, ironically, was Ambience Recorders (located in downtown Ottawa).  My bass drum was a 20” Camco walnut with front head removed, bare minimum muffling, and tuned low.  The studio owner / producer / engineer / bass player (Phil Bova Sr – aka:  Phillip Victor Bova) joined me cutting tracks, between songs checking console settings.  At one point, Phil uttered something memorable:  “I know that you’re going to a huge sounds, but then minutes ago on that Latin track you played a bit quieter.  Your bass drum sounded huge compared to now!  Maybe you’re playing so hard the drum is choking.”  The Sky opened that day.  I began working at dropping my volume a couple of dB.  Phil was right.  Interestingly, when I met non-basher Charlie Watts on assignment for Modern Drummer, he had just cut an electronica album with Jim Keltner.  The three of us were seated in Charlie’s lofty mid-town NY hotel room discussing another modern legend, Steve Jordan.  As I recall, both Charlie and Jim had seen Jordan recording and were amazed that Steve played his bass drum relatively quietly yet obtained such a huge kick sound… The point is that if you are not getting your dream sound, and you’ve done all the right things with the drum key, perhaps you sould try lightening up a wee bit.  The laws of nature and acoustics might just conspire and gat you a monster drum sound.  Sure, playing loud feels good, but it’s not always the ticket

“Maps – Burned or Lost is the sixth studio album from Sills & Smith. And although they have produced some mighty fine music in the past, they knock it out of the park with this one … Maps – Burned or Lost is an album to which you should give your undivided attention.
While earlier albums by Sills & Smith leaned towards a more prog rock sound, this album is almost stripped-bare at times. They have a lot of people helping them out, but producer Phillip Victor Bova (who also provides outstanding bass, keyboards, strings and Hammond organ) has wisely let the songs breathe on their own. He knows when to build up the sound, and he knows when to step back and let Sills & Smith do their own thing.”

“Words really can’t express how much I appreciate every thing both of you have done!
When I chose Bova Sound, there were a few reasons.  The previous experience I had in Oxford Mills.  The Grand Piano but most important was the fact that both Caroline and Lyne were rookies (they are not now!) and I felt that working with Phil would be best for them.  My intuition certainly proved correct!
And while I have had some experience in playing in the studio, I have never acted as a producer.  And Phil, thank you so much for jumping in on this role when you feel it necessary!  And thanks to both of you for your kind understanding.  Annie is a Gods send to Lyne!
